Former British Consulate

The former Ching means the Ching Dynasty while Taka is the ancient name of Kaohsiung.
The consulate was built in 1865 with more than a hundred years of history. It is now the most antique western building preserved in Taiwan, which is listed as the second-class historic spot. It was the western building designed by a British engineer and built by Chinese craftsmen, and it is the most meaningful ancient building of Chinese modern history with graceful and elegant proportion. Semicircle arches are rhythmically arranged in order with considerably rhyming. At the corner, the circle arch is smaller and the wall pillar is bigger, which has reinforced function in dynamics. It is the Baroque typed building of the Renaissance era. It emphasizes on the stylish regular pattern and its hollow pattern railings were built with excellent bricks. Harmonious sense of beauty is shown at every turn. Among the existing western style buildings in Taiwan, it provides an excellent example of technique and style and that possesses the value of historical architecture study and conservation value. The building brick and mortar used all continue using the traditional method of Fukien and Taiwan. Some parts are even filled with clay and soil, while wooden truss is built with complete western style. It is the building that has double function, administrative and residencial function, and its style also lies in between them. It is the portrayal illustration of modern Chinese and Western cultural communication, and also the first formal consulate built by foreigners in Taiwan. The occurrence of consulate opened up the development of western architecture for Taiwan in the future.

Dream Mall

Nature, life and maritime culture converge at Dream Mall, Kaohsiung City's first international class shopping and leisure center. The new mall is situated in Kaohsiung Multifunctional Commerce and Trade Park adjacent to Chenggong Rd. and Jhonghua Rd. The east-west running Time Avenue lies to the north and Kaohsiung International Airport, Kaohsiung Harbor, Sun Yat-sen Expressway and MRT stations are located nearby, making the mall easy to reach. The front Blue Whale Hall rises seven floors, while the main mall building has nine aboveground floors plus two underground levels providing indoor parking for up to 3,561 cars and 2,016 scooters. An additional 605 cars, 636 scooters, and 21 buses can fit into the outside lot.

The shopping area of Dream Mall covers about 257,000 square meters of the total floor space of 400,000 square meters, accommodating nearly 600 major retail shops. Among them are five anchor businesses—Uni-Hankyu Department Store of Japan, Britain's Marks & Spencer Department Store, Japan's Hokkaido Ice & Snow Theme Park, Hello Kitty Ferris Wheel, Happy 100, and Cinemark Cinema—as well as 18 big box stores. The innovative mall design incorporates natural and maritime motifs based on the four major themes of water, flowers, nature, and the universe. In addition to shopping, visitors to Dream Mall combines leisure, recreation, art and culture, and dining functions to create a major new recreation landmark in the maritime capital of Kaohsiung.

(Clearwisdom.net) The 2009 Asia Falun Dafa Cultivation Experience Sharing Conference was held in Taichung, Taiwan on November 22, 2009. Seven thousand practitioners from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, United States, Thailand, and Vietnam attended. They learned from each other's experiences and were encouraged to improve diligently in the practice.

Twenty practitioners spoke at the podium about how they followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in their daily lives to become better people. They talked about how they conquered their fear when telling people about the facts of the persecution of Falun Gong in China, how they eliminated interference in the process.

On Nov.21, 2009, as an opening ceremony of the Asia Falun Dafa Cultivation Experience Sharing Conference, more than 6,000 Falun Dafa practitioners from Asia arrived at Taiwan Agriculture Field in Taichung. They lined up to form an image of Zhuan Falun, the book that guides cultivation practice. The activity was to celebrate and commemorate the spread of Falun Dafa as well as to show their respect and gratitude to Master Li.

Chen Chu Mayor of Kaohsiung,Taiwan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_Chu

Chen Chu (traditional Chinese: 陳菊pinyin: Chén Jú; Wade-Giles: Ch'én Chǘ; born 10 June 1950 in Yilan County, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese politician who is the current mayor of Kaohsiung. She was one of the "Kaohsiung Eight," prominent dissidents arrested after the Kaohsiung Incident in 1979. She spent six years in jail during the martial law period in Taiwan.

Chen, who holds a master's degree from National Sun Yat-sen University, held senior appointed posts in Taipei City and Kaohsiung City governments between 1995 and 2000. She then served as minister of the Council of Labor Affairs between 2000 and 2005. Chen resigned in the wake of a scandal concerning Thai laborers brought into Taiwan to work on the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit system project.

In 2006, Chen won the Kaohsiung mayoral elections and became the city's first elected female mayor.

On August 30, 2009, The 14th Dalai Lama accepted an invitation from Chen Chu to visit Taiwan.[1]

Taipei 101 Tower

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taipei_101

Taipei 101 (traditional Chinese: 台北101 / 臺北101), also known as the Taipei Financial Center, is a landmark skyscraper located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. The building became the world's tallest skyscraper upon its completion in 2004. as certified by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat[2]. Taipei 101, designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and constructed primarily by KTRT Joint Venture and Samsung Engineering & Construction[3] received the 2004 Emporis Skyscraper Award and was hailed as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World (Newsweek magazine, 2006) and Seven Wonders of Engineering (Discovery Channel, 2005).[dead link][4] The tower is an icon of modern Taiwan. Fireworks launched from Taipei 101 feature prominently in international New Year's Eve broadcasts and the structure appears frequently in travel literature and international media.

Taipei 101 comprises 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. The name of the tower (pronounced "one oh one" in English) reflects its floor count and carries symbolic meanings alluding to technology and Asian tradition (see "Symbolism" below.) Its postmodernist approach to style incorporates traditional design elements and gives them modern treatments. The tower is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. A multi-level shopping mall adjoining the tower houses hundreds of fashionable stores, restaurants and clubs.

Taipei 101 is owned by the Taipei Financial Center Corporation (TFCC) and managed by the International division of Urban Retail Properties Corporation based in Chicago. The name originally planned for the building, Taipei World Financial Center, was derived from the name of the owner. The original name in Chinese was literally, Taipei International Financial Center (traditional Chinese: 臺北國際金融中心pinyin: Táiběi Guójì Jīnróng Zhōngxīn).

Taipei 101 was overtaken in height on 2007 July 21 by the Burj Dubai in Dubai, UAE, upon completion of the Burj's 141st floor. Taipei 101 retains the title of "world's tallest building", however, as international architectural standards define a "building" as a completed structure capable of being occupied. The Burj Dubai is expected to reach completion in January 2010. Taipei 101 is likely to retain the title of the Asia-Pacific region's tallest skyscraper until 2014, when its height will be surpassed by the Lotte Super Tower 123 in Seoul, South Korea.
